Why do these PTOs mount at the rear of the transmission?
Because that is where these gearboxes take the drive out. The units bolt to the back of the transmission, with the PTO output shaft in line with the gearbox main shaft, and take Flange or ISO mounting.
How are they engaged?
By air pressure from a switch in the cab; electric shift is available on one of the units.
